The 1st, as the name implies, really is the center of central Paris, near the Seine and the Halles shopping area, not to mention attractions such as the Palais Royal and Louvre, and much more. The 1st also has an undeniably commercial feel, as nearly a million pass through each day.
Moving across the Seine, there are other areas to be explored, depending on your needs. If you value education or are in the business of education, the 5th district and the Latin Quarter are the home of many acclaimed universities and schools. The Sorbonne is here, as is the Beaux Arts and Ecole normale supérieure, which counts many top-ranking French diplomats and government officials among its former students.
The 6th and St. Germain are stunning examples of Paris at its most picturesque. Beautiful Haussmann style buildings, bakeries, bookshops, restaurants and galleries add to the appeal, as each corner seems truly photographable, each moment something to be cherished.
Not far from here, the Boulevard St. Michel here makes for a relaxing stroll, and is very popular among local students. As one passes the beautiful greenery of Paris' largest park, the Luxembourg Gardens, one may be tempted in to read beneath the shady trees or work on a laptop while listening to free chamber music or near a puppet show.
