:: How to choose your Paris apartment rentals Botanic Garden? ::
The 5th district of Paris has so much to offer those looking for a charming apartment in Paris. The Jardin des Plantes deserved a special mention of its own, as one of Paris' most fascinating places to explore.
Nearly 30 hectares in size (a quarter of a million square meters), the main botanical garden of France certainly impresses in size alone. After all, this was originally the garden of King Louis XIII. Originally it was the royal herb garden, as was known as the Jardin du Roi (Garden of the King). It was created by the King's doctor, Guy de La Brosse, and opened for the public to enjoy in the mid-17th century.
The Jardin has undergone many changes over the years. Originally opulent, they underwent a decline as the country underwent changes in governance and other priorities became paramount.
The gardens began to spring back to life (as it were) when they were taken over by Jean-Baptiste Colbert in the 1600s. Next in line was Dr. Guy Crescent Fagon, who in 1693 became administrator, bringing in a staff of brilliant botanists to breathe new life into the purpose behind their existence. The gardens became an institution of research and botanical learning, to a degree that had not been previously seen. Then in 1739 the Count de Buffon became curator. The Compte undertook an expansion of the Jardin, creating the Labyrinth which still remains. In the late 18th century, the gardens became home to animals as well as plants when the Royal Menagerie was moved from Versailles.
Today the Jardin des Plantes is much more than simply a large garden. There is a lot to see and do here while staying in your long or short term apartment rentals Paris. Lodging in an apartment rental around the Botanic Garden, Paris is a must.
For example, the Jardin is also home to the Museum of Natural History. Four galleries comprise the museum, covering a wide spectrum of the world's natural phenomena. The Grand Evolutionary Gallery explores the phenomenon of evolution itself, and the Museum of Paleontology explores the study of the history of life. The Museum of Mineralogy and the Museum of Entomology are also a fun way to spend an afternoon. The small aquarium and zoo in the Jardin were created in the late 18th century by Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, using the animals from Versailles' royal menagerie.
There are also "themed" displays covering three hectares, such as the Alpine garden, a hothouse with Australian plants, an Art Deco winter garden, and the Mexican hothouse, an early example of architecture incorporating glass and metal. The Mexican hothouse, completed in 1836 by Rohault de Fleury, is a favorite attraction.
As a center of learning, the Jardin des Plantes also houses a botanical school, covering a hectare. The school trains botanists and is part of a biodiversity project that incorporates a seed exchange program.
As you'll see as you walk from your Paris 5th arrondissement apartments rental, the botanic garden (Jardin des Plantes) is one of Paris' most beautifull garden. The 5th district is one of the oldest parts of the city, home to the Latin Quarter, and steps from the Seine and the Notre Dame, among other attractions.
The history of the 5th can be traced all the way back to the Roman Empire. There are even attractions here that exist from the era, such as the Thermes de Cluny (the old Roman thermal baths), or an old Roman amphitheatre called the Arènes de Lutèce.
The daily open-air market here along the rue Mouffetard, with its wide variety of wine and cheese shops, follows an ancient Roman route. The market is a favorite among locals, who come here daily to buy fruit, seafood and other fresh goodies from the French sea and countryside. To give another sense of the history, many of the buildings here are 900 years old.
Apartment rentals in Paris in the 5th let you explore many of the places of worship that exist in this very spiritual and historical area.
For history, try the Museum of the Middle Ages, located in an abbey dating back to the 15th century, near the old Roman baths. The medieval artifacts and art here are wonderful for anyone interested in this fascinating era between the classical era and the Renaissance.
The Pantheon, created by Louis XV to honor Paris' patron saint St. Geneviève (who saved Paris from the Huns, in 451), this great neo-Classical church later became a crypt for some of Paris' most famous cultural figures, including Rousseau and Voltaire, Victor Hugo, Zola, and the Curies. Its most recent occupant is Alexandre Dumas.
The Great Mosque of Paris was founded in the area in 1926, built to thanks the Muslim world for their help against the Germain. You can sip some mint tea here, and the North African food comes highly recommended.
Yet another testament to St. Geneviève is the Eglise Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre. This church, which incorporates Gothic and Renaissance stylings, was created between roughly 1500 and 1630.
