The history of the Champs-Elysées is colorful. Like so much of Paris, it began as a royal project, first created the mid-seventeenth century by Louis XIV's gardener to improve the view from the Tuileries garden. Toward the end of the 1700s, this broad, elegant avenue was extended. Today it runs from the place de la Concorde all the way to the Arc de Triomphe.
The "Arch of Triumph" was commissioned by Napoleon in 1806 as a tribute to his victories as Emperor of France. It was finally completed in 1836, long after his death. The Arc is the center of the main east-west road axis of Paris, which travels between the Louvre and the Grande Arche de la Défense in the west. 150 feet high, it is adorned with battle scenes and military sculptures. In 1920 the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was created beneath the arch. It contains an eternal flame that burns in memory of the French killed in both World Wars.
The arc is surrounded by l'Etoile. (Literally, "The Star.") This roundabout has a dozen thoroughfares from a central point.
