Paris can be a difficult, tricky place. There are many rules and customs; so many, in fact, it isn't really possible to learn them all overnight. You simply have to do your best. But the single most important thing you must do in Paris, to be perceived as a friendly force, is to attempt to speak French, regardless of your level of fluency. Remember to always say "bonjour" or "bonsoir" when you enter a restaurant or shop, and don't launch into English immediately after doing so. Beginning by saying "excusez-moi, mais je parle en peu français" (excuse me, I only speak a little French) will help you immeasurably. A great many French people speak a degree of English, and will do their best to meet you half way, if you make the honest effort to speak in French, first.
