Tip: MANNERS – PARIS' OWN RULES

Paris is filled with polite people who are eager to help the tourist. It is also filled with brusque, rude people, just like every other large city in the world. There are a few things you should be aware of while in Paris. First, the sense of time is different. So what seems like hours to you may not be a rude intention on the part of a waiter, clerk, etc. It is a cultural difference. The main thing to understand is that much in France depends on small manners and etiquette. Certain gestures hold more weight than in other countries. For example, it is considered a necessity (not an option) to acknowledge a shop owner or waiter when entering an establishment. To fail to do so is perceived as rude. Fortunately, the fix is simple. A small "bonjour" or "bonsoir" when entering a shop or restaurant, "merci" when helped, will do wonders. As you leave a shop, "au revoir," "bon journee" (have a nice day), or "bon soiree" (have a nice evening) shows you are gentile, polite, and aware of the code. These little touches will put you far ahead of many who visit Paris and seem to amble blindly over the local sense of politeness. You should also be aware that if buying food from a small market, you shouldn't serve yourself unless you see a sign that says "service libre" (serve yourself). When in doubt, simply ask the vendor if it's okay to select goods for yourself. As always, politeness goes a long way.
